About Me:
I would
define myself as a keen observer, exploring my surroundings and trying to
understand the rules of nature had always been intriguing for me. This is why I
have always had an enthusiasm to study science and engineering. In this
process, I mistakenly denied my passion to draw, design and paint. I started my
undergraduate study in Sabanci University as an engineer in an effort to
understand the fundamentals of physics, techniques used for modelling the
physical laws of the universe and above all, how it becomes possible to
manipulate our environment in the cause of solving humankinds’ problems. It was
a mind opening adventure. I leant physics and chemistry, how to use coding as
an efficient tool, even how to manipulate robot arms. Meanwhile learning materials
to their last detail; I learnt how they interact with their surroundings, with
light. What cause any material to be colorful, why leaves look green, but
metals look grey, how we utilize mechanical sensors to interpret the
surroundings like our biological sensors. Satisfying my curiosity regarding
understanding the basics of cosmos and human nature, came with more
philosophical questions to be answered. I am now committed to pursue those
answers through the methods of arts.
Taking
lectures from the Visual Arts program during my education, I found
opportunities to learn the basics of visual language, drawing, painting, and
3D-modelling. Results were way beyond my expectations. I found myself very
ambitious and competitive about learning the methods of visual communication,
trying to understand how to observe and reflect my surroundings and my
imagination, while discovering my own style and artistic vison. I believe these
made me start seeing the world from the eye of an artist. Besides the joy of
learning a completely different way of self-expression, I must admit that the
process of trying to understand even the very basics of visual arts while
discovering your capabilities can be backbreaking and stressful. These
struggles offered opportunities to focus on my individuality and discover who I
really am, an unparalleled experience I consider myself lucky to have had.
Throughout
my gap year, I realize I started showing interest on philosophy and therefore
many other subjects to delve into through my art practice: like the human
nature, biology of our brains and human perception, artificial intelligence and
machine learning, human psychology, our behavioral evolution and the illusion
of free will, emergence of different cultures, different ways of communication
in history, emergence of languages and so on. For this course, I want to focus
on "artificial intelligence" and obviously its artistic applications,
throughout this semester.
